Solanum melongena L., also known as brinjal, eggplant, or aubergine, belongs to the Solanaceae family and is a popular vegetable in Asia, parts of Europe, and Africa. Brinjal has been cultivated in Bangladesh for over 4,000 years, despite its reputation as a Mediterranean or Middle Eastern vegetable. It is grown all year on about 50 thousand hectares of land by 150 thousand farmers.
Brinjal is grown in almost all agro-climatic zones with over 100 different varieties under cultivation, offering fruits of different color, size, shape, and taste. Red and White International only procure BT Brinjal from the local farmers. Since its introduction in 2014, BT brinjal farmers in Bangladesh have increased their yield while using fewer chemical pesticides. According to a 2018 government impact assessment study, farmers who cultivated Bt brinjal earned 55% more and were less vulnerable to health risks associated with chemical pesticide use than non-Bt brinjal growers.
